Here he is a New York constable who believes in forensic evidence and faints at the sight of blood. Burton was openly making a Hammer horror film. He cast Christopher Lee, the definitive Hammer leading man, in a single scene as the burgomaster who sends Crane upstate, and the whole palette of desaturated greys against arterial red is lifted from that era.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the Washington Irving story Ichabod Crane is a schoolteacher. The film makes him a police constable with a case of forensic instruments, which is entirely an invention of the screenplay.
