Originally from Salford, Greater Manchester, Joy Division is a well-known rock band which initially formed back in 1976. The group was composed of guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, drummer Stephen Morris and vocalist Ian Curtis. The group was first known as Warsaw, but later changed their name to Joy Division. Inspired by a Sex Pistols performance, Joy Division helped push the boundaries on the post-punk genre from the late seventies. After singer Ian Curtis committed suicide in 1980, several of the other members continued performing as New Order. Joy Division was active from 1976 until 1980, but made a big impact with their musical contributions at the time.
