Originally written by Tsugumi Ohba, Death Note quickly became a hit manga series over the years. Death Note made its first debut in the popular Japanese manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump in 2003, and the series continued to run until 2006. Illustrated by Takeshi Obata, the manga series later became adapted into an anime series. With a complex storyline, Death Note is often classified as a psychological thriller, with supernatural themes and detective elements. The story follows high school student Light Yagami, who comes across a mysterious object called the "Death Note". Yagami has the power to kill anyone that he's ever seen before, simply by writing their name into the notebook. Light meets the first owner of the notebook, Shinigami Ryuk, and he tells him that he'd like to rule the world without criminals. The series has become widely popular over the years, spurring the creation of several light novels, videogames and live-action films based on the Death Note series.
