While new updates about Kingdom Hearts 3 are still unknown, fans of the beloved RPG will rejoice with the upcoming release of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue for PlayStation. Developed by Square Enix, the game title follows Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix, which was released on October 2, 2014. For those gamers who need a quick refresher on where the new release falls into timeline, we’ve rounded up some details below.

In 2002, fans of the beloved Final Fantasy role-playing videogame franchise were given a dream come true—Kingdom Hearts. The hack-and-slash adventure series was developed and published by Square (now Square Enix), in collaboration with The Walt Disney Company. In the game, the story follows the plucky teen, Sora, and as he fights against the villainous Heartless creatures. Joined by Donald Duck and Goofy, they combine forces to help Sora reunite with his childhood friends, Riku and Kairi. Featuring iconic characters from animated Disney classics and the Final Fantasy series, it became a massively popular title for PlayStation 2. Video game designer Tetsuya Nomura was given his first directorial role, and today, the game ranks in the ten top selling PlayStation 2 videogames of all time. Inspired by classic titles like Super Mario and real-life locations like the Disney Theme Parks, Kingdom Hearts has had numerous sequels over the years. At E3 in 2013, the long-awaited Kingdom Hearts III was announced to be in the works, and fans are still eagerly awaiting any details about the title.

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 includes three stories for fans of the series, including Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD, a movie called kingdom Hearts x Back Cover and Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep (A Fragmentary Passage). Originally released in 2012, Dream Drop Distance is a remastered version of Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance and marks the first version that can be played on PlayStation. Follow Sora and Riku as they partake on the Mark of Mastery exam and get prepared for inevitable evil threats. A huge leap forward from the 3DS days, Dream Drop Distance offers action-packed battles and even more ways to explore the world of Kingdom Hearts. For gaming fans eager to learn more backstory, turn to the Kingdom Hearts x Back Cover movie. This high def movie highlights the early parts of Kingdom Hearts history, exploring more about the mysterious Foretellers. The film is based on Kingdom Hearts X and includes new footage that wasn't released in the original game.

If you can't get enough gameplay, don't worry! Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage is another original game offered up by Square Enix and Disney. Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage follows the events of Birth by Sleep, and follows the perspective from Aqua. Players can also partake in a three-part side quest to help Mickey find his way back home.

Fans who pre-order the Limited Edition game through the Square Enix Online Store will receive an exclusive Kingdom Hearts pin. Although Japanese fans were able to get into the action on January 12, 2017, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue will be released worldwide for PlayStation 4 players on Tuesday, January 24, 2017.
