Ever wanted to travel to some of your favorite video game locations? New York-based travel company AllTheRooms has rounded up 5 real-life video game locations that any top gamer simply has to visit. From the mystical tombs of Angkor Wat in Cambodia in Tomb Raider through to Assassin Creed’s historically accurate representation of Rome, here are the top picks:

1. Assassin's Creed Brotherhood: Rome

The Assassin’s Creed series is known for its impressive game locations and awesome graphics. In Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, you can explore the city of Rome in the 16th century, where you are tasked with restoring the Assassin order and destroying enemies. It features some of Rome’s top locations, such as the Colosseum, which was once home to bloody gladiator battles, the Pantheon, which was a Pagan temple and Capitoline Hill, which is a hill dedicated to the god of Saturn. The game’s creators worked with a Renaissance era expert to ensure all the small details are historically accurate and the results are mind-blowingly realistic. If you’re a big Assassin's Creed fan, why not check out some of Nerd Kung Fu’s cool t-shirts here.

2. Crash Bandicoot: Tasmania

Crash Bandicoot is one of the best, old-school video games and it was one of the first games to take its players on a virtual vacation. The game is played on the fictitious Wumpa island, which is said to be off the coast of Australia and close to Tasmania. It definitely bears a strong resemblance to Tasmania with its tropical beaches, miles of untouched jungle and mysterious ruins. If you’re keen to see it for yourself, find some cool accommodation options in Tasmania.

3: Resident Evil: Springfield, Missouri

There are a lot of theories over the ‘real’ location of Resident Evil’s Raccoon City, with the balance weighing that it’s based on Springfield in Missouri. Raccoon City bares a strong resemblance to Midwestern US towns such as Springfield, with its simple houses, hills and caves. The city of Springfield also has a similar population size to that of the fictional Raccoon City, which we are told has 100,000 residents. If you can’t make it to Springfield but are still a Resident Evil mega fan, you can check out t-shirts here.

4. Grand Theft Auto: Miami, Los Angeles and NYC

The original Grand Theft Auto was set across three cities, which bare strong resemblance to places in the U.S. GTA’s ‘Liberty City’ was based upon New York City; the fictional city of ‘Vice City’ is largely based on Miami; and the city of San Andreas has lots of traits of Los Angeles. All three cities have serious crime issues in certain neighborhoods and cool downtown locations, so it’s easy to see why the game makers used these cities for inspiration.

5. Tomb Raider: Cambodia

Tomb Raider is set in the mystical temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The site is known as the largest religious monument in the world and features the ruins of 12th-century temples from the Khmer Empire. Nature has tried to reclaim the land, and many of the temples are now crumbling ruins with thick trees and branches winding through the structures, giving a super eerie feel to the place. The ruins were used as a filming location for the Tomb Raider film, starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. Want to see it for yourself? Find a place to stay near to Angkor Wat in nearby Siem Reap.
