Another shirt that seemed like a good idea at the time but in retrospect am having second thoughts. Not that it's a bad image. Just that I have no idea how to classify it or have any idea what to write about it. Oh, well. I guess it's time to appreciate a challenge.
Let's see. I guess when I think if super computers I come to Cray, the Super Computer Company. It is disconcerting that their products and brochures don't say anything about how much they cost. I guess if you are seriously in the market you should have a pretty good idea how much they cost when you call them. Either that or you need a super computer to figure out how much it totals and how long you will be paying for it.
I found this definition of a Super Computer. Honestly, this explanation is not selling me on the idea of buying one. It sounds like you could either buy a brand new super computer today, or just wait a year and a half and buy the new MacBook. In my opinion if you spend $20,000,000 on a computer it would not be unreasonable to expect it to be cutting edge for more than a couple weeks.
Wow. Talk about depreciation. In 2002 the Japanese government spent $400,000,000 on the world’s most expensive computer. They use it to predict the weather or something? Seems like we do the same thing with desktops. The Japanese love having the most expensive or advanced anything, I guess.
The other thing that comes to mind when I think of super computers is the move War Games, which I watched recently at a friends house. Great movie, but really funny to watch the old real to real computers. I wasn't really motivated to find something cool on the movie, but I did find this flash War Game you can play for free. Looks kind of fun, but I don't want download something new. I think I will try it out tonight. |
