Honestly, I don't know how great a school Star Fleet Academy is. I saw an episode of Voyager where some of the non-Star Fleet crew have to go through what is more or less basic training under Tuvok and to be honest, it seemed kind of soft. Of course, when I think of military basic training I naturally go back to Gunnery Sergeant Hartman
(<-warning-unedited bad language). Of course, if you are worried about the language or just want to experience a surreal laugh watch the Gunnery Sergeant Hartman opening speech in German
Anyway, in the Voyager Episode (which I couldn't really find) Tuvok, who claims to be a former Star Fleet Academy instructor, find himself explaining his training to the recruits, where if a recruit had asked a question of Senior Drill Instructor Hartman his body would have never been found.
Of course, this looks to be the trend according to this Time Magazine article
that talks about how most military boot camps have gotten softer.
On the other hand this article was from 1997. I am willing to bet that they have had to ramp things up a bit for guys going over to Iraq or Afghanistan (my cousin is in Iraq right now. I wish him and all the other men and women serving to be safe).
Anyway, I suppose I need to talk about this shirt. Just like I did for Miskatonic University, I found a website for a fantasy Star Fleet Academy
, complete with a PDF application. Of course, the application will get you into the Star Trek Fan Club behind the site, but funny nevertheless. I find these types of sites endlessly entertaining.
