According to the
Urban Dictionary Oscar the Grouch is "The poorest M-Fer on Sesame Street and ain't nobody helpin' him." I think this is appropriate. Everyone keeps trying to cheer Oscar up on the show, but no one addresses the fact that he is homeless and living in a trashcan. No wonder he is always grouchy. Honestly, instead of singing him a song or something lame like that why don't they give him $10 and a lift to the homeless shelter? That would put a smile on his face, I bet.
When you think about it, Sesame Street is comprised of a number of dysfunctional personalities. You've got the homeless man (Oscar the Grouch), the eating disorder man(Cookie Monster), the obsessive compulsive vampire (the Count), the co-dependent couple (Bert and Ernie), the schizophrenic bird (Big Bird, who has conversations with his teddy bear), and the Narcissistic red whatever (Elmo, as in Everyone Loves Elmo). I came up with this on my own, but through the magic of the internet I found with very little effort this
article detailing the disorders on the show and what it could be doing to kids today.
Anyway, I think Oscar is my favorite character. I found this great
Oscar the Grouch for American Idol judge Facebook page and think it's brilliant. I think he would finally bring the appropriate level of seriousness to that dumb karaoke contest (thank you
Howard Stern). Here is Oscar at his best singing "
I Love Trash"
By the way, for some strange reason in 1969 and 1970 Oscar was orange rather than green. Weird.
