This was another one I wasn't going to bring in, but the Emo thing just made me laugh.  Personally, Care Bears make me gag, but if you are looking for irony this one screams it.

Ugh.  I was just looking over my products and guilted myself into doing more research about Care Bears.  They were actually created by American Greetings in 1981 for greeting cards and were made into toys in 1983.  1981 is MCMLXXXI in Roman numeral.  Some other major disasters that occurred in 1981 include Brazilian boat Novo Amapo capsizing and killing 230 people, a fire at the Las Vegas Hilton kills 8, President Reagan is shot in the chest by John Hinkley, a passenger train in India falls off a bridge and kills 800, Isreal bombed Beirut for the first time, Bolivia is taken over by General Luis Gracia Meza in a bloody coup, Ronald Reagan fires 11,359 striking air traffic controllers, and I started my first year at Shorecliffs Jr. High.  This was my first realization that I was going to spend the next six years surrounded by surf losers and jocks, so it resounds heavily in my head.  If you want to see how lame it was here is the school's home page.

On the positive side, 1981 was the year I discovered my local game store, Palau became self governing, the Yorkshire Ripper was arrested and convicted, the hostages in Iran came home, the first DeLorean was built, the space shuttle program got of the ground (literally), the rock band Yes broke up, Sandra Day O'Connor was nominated as the first female Supreme Court Justice, MTV was started and actually went a few months without sucking, and the Church of England voted to allow women into their holy order.

Overall, a mixed year, like most.  Sorry, but I can't really get into the whole Care Bear thing.
