I wish S.H.I.E.L.D. existed for real. They would put and end to all the crap we have going on with terrorists in a hurry. Nick Fury does not mess around. SHIELD originally stood for Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division. It was later changed to Strategic Hazard Intervention, Espionage Logistics Directorate and in the movies Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk it was Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, which I think is the lamest version. Did they really have to crowbar Homeland in there? Also SHIELD is supposed to be an international organization (started by the United Nations) so exactly what Homeland are they referring to?
Only comic books can come up with organizations with cool names like that. Real world organizations end up with acronyms like FEMA or CIA or something equally inane. Even evil companies get cool name in comic books. SHIELD's enemy was HYDRA. Real life evil companies get names like
Halliburton.
Incidentally, the leader of HYDRA was Baron Wolfgang von Strucker. What a great name. I wish I had been named Wolfgang. I might have had a girlfriend in high school.
